Dodge began using transponder chip keys with the Dodge Sebring 1998. Transponder based mechanism are mandatry or optional depends on model and year.
Usually, if your key has a gray colored rubber head, it has a transponder.
In 2004, Dodge launched accepting keys with the remote originated in the cap of the key. Most models switched to the new remote head key in the years following.

In 2008, Dodge started to use the FOBIK key. Instead of metal blade, a FOB consist of a remote that slides into a socket in the ignition lock.

When you insert a SKIM key into the ignition, the SKIS sends out an RF signal to the transponder in the key. If the key recognize the vehicle, it sends a unique message back to the computer with its unique code. The SKIS confirm that the key authorised to start this particular vehicle. If the key is not programmed for the vehicle, it will shut down after two seconds of running.
Note - The 2-door Stratus and 2-door Sebring 2000-2001 use Mitsubishi style locks. The following duplication methods will not work with those vehicles.
Dodge vehicles may have extra keys added utilizing a simple dash-board console procedure. Only if the driver have not less than two valid keys that are already coded.
In 2010 Dodge started disallowing the dashboard key decoding feature for some cars.

When this happens, a locksmith change the ignition again or to cut a new key by reading the key trenches inside the ignition lock. This process is more complicated and requisites a locksmith with the relevant experience and machinery.
If your Dodge manufactured after the year 1998, your key might contain a transponder chip.
If you have no key to an immobilized Dodge, the ECU reprogrammed to recognize a new key. This means that the car towed to the dealer or to have an emergency lock-smith who will arrive to your site.
