Dodge began using transponder chip keys with the Dodge Sebring 1998. Transponder based mechanism are mandatry or optional depends on model and year.
Usually, if your key has a gray colored rubber head, it has a transponder.
In 2004, Dodge initiated accepting keys with the remote founded in the head of the key. Most models switched to the new remote head key in the following years.
The keys are more fancy of course, but a non-remote key used instead.
In 2008, Dodge introduced the FOBIK key. Instead of metal blade, a FOB integrates a remote that slides into a socket in the ignition lock.
These key fob remote are also more fancy, but there is a non-remote 'POD' key for these system as well.
Beginning at 2011, Dodge applied the 'Keyless Go'. Some models have optional or mandatory keyless access key with a pushbutton-start ignition.
A fundamental goal of Dodge transponder and immobiliser is to prevent unauthorized vehicle access and theft. The remote clicker option also provide extra convenience and security.
When you insert a SKIM key into the ignition, the SKIS sends out an RF signal to the transponder in the key. If the key recognize the vehicle, it sends a unique message back to the computer with its unique code. The SKIS confirm that the key authorised to start this particular vehicle. If the key is not programmed for the vehicle, it will shut down after two seconds of running.
Note - The 2-door Stratus and 2-door Sebring 2000-2001 use Mitsubishi style locks. The following duplication methods will not work with those vehicles.
Dodge vehicles may have backup keys added employing a simple dashboard process. Only if the user have not less than two working keys that are already coded.
In 2010 Dodge started excluding the dashboard key compiling feature for some cars.
If there is only one key exist, the car plugged to a dedicated programmer to add another key.
If you only left with 1 functional key, the on-board process will not work! A locksmith or the dealer can still copy your key using the VIN number and a proof of ownership. This done using dedicated diagnostics and programming tools.
One more option the dealer and the locksmith have is to copy and clone the key-data into a new cut blank. This also done using dedicated diagnostics tools and programmers.
When all keys are lost to a Dodge manufactured before 1998, the key has no transponder chip. All you have to do is to take an Uber to the to a locksmith store with the VIN and make you a newish key.
This process is quite straight forward and in most cases will cost less than a 100$.
One exception to what written above is if the ignition cylinder replaced and is not in sync with the vehicle identification number.
When this happens, a locksmith swap the ignition again or to make a new key by copying the key curves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more compound and requires a locksmith with a proper experience and machinery.
If your Dodge manufactured after the year 1998, your key may contain a transponder chip.
When all keys are lost to an immobilized Dodge, the motor vehicle ECU recompiled to use a new key. This means that you need a towing truck to tow the motor vehicle to the dealership or to use the service of an emergency locksmith who will arrive to your site.
