The first Subaru transponder key appeared in 2005 with the Imprezza, Forrester, Legacy and Outback. All other models followed shortly when some adopt a laser cut key.
Since 2009 all models use an encrypted sidewinder transponder or a smart key with a push to start ignition. Subaru uses the (Keyless Access with Push-Button Start) technology as either standard or optional equipment. This proximity key contain a chip that works with a battery.
The Subaru immobilizer is a secondary security module protecting the vehicle against theft. Without the proper programmed key inputs the car, the fuel to the ignition will be cut-off preventing the engine from starting.
The Subaru immmobilizer was invented around 30 years ago with the mission to prevent the car theft. An antenna (coil) integrated in a chip key and an immobilisation control box and reception antenna are integrated in the ECU. Every time the key inserted to the ignition keyhole, the key emit a RFID signal with an encrypted code. The immmobilizer check that the code emitted by the key match the one stored in it's memory. If the code is not recognized, the fuel-pump is shut down and the vehicle will no ignite.
There is no on-board interface to duplicate Subaru transponder keys by yourself. To program the key, a dedicated diagnostic tools, programmers are required. On top of this equipment, the registered dealer or the locksmith must have internet connection to the Subaru Lock Information Site (SLIS). Using the VIN each new key approved by Subaru before it can start the car.
Following are the list of Subaru models that use transponders:
An immobilized Subaru comes with a master key, submaster key, valet key and a key number plate. The master and submaster key works on the ignition switch, trunk, doors and glove box. The valet key fits only the door locks and ignition switch.
Only the dealer or a locksmith can duplicate keys for Subaru and each vehicle can have up to 4 duplicate keys. A duplicate key can be done by the VIN or by a cloning process:
You will need the 17 character VIN, a proof of ownership which is registration or title and a matching driver license. The locksmith or dealer will use them to obtain the cutting key code which usually cost between $10-$25.
Two important tips before buying a duplicate Subaru key or remote:
Subaru key cloning is a process of copying the key without having the car. The technician use the data embedded in the original transponder to program a new replicates key.
A locksmith with Subaru key programmer and diagnosis tool can create cloned key using 2 methods:
There is no onboard interface to program keys. Only the dealer or a locksmith can program keys and remote to all Subaru immobilized models.
When you lose all your keys to a Subaru the process is very similar to a key duplication. Reprogramming interface and tools are available only to the Subaru dealer or to a licensed locksmith. The vehicle computer is reprogrammed to accept a new key and reject the lost keys.
Just like key duplication service, all they need to cut and program a new key is the VIN and a proof of ownership.
