In the mid 1990s manufacturers of automobiles introduced the use transponder keys and immobiliser. A transponder chip de-activates the immobiliser when the key turned in the ignition. Only a specific programmed key can burst the engine.
When the key turned in the ignition key crack, the ECU transmits an electrical indicator message to the key. The car will turn over only if it reaps a consistent indication back.

The use of Securilock electric keys began in 1996 for the Mazda 626
as an optional component. Since 1998 some motor vehicles assembled with passive anti theft II and some with P.A.T.S I.
From year 2000 Mazda use the electronic P.A.T with an encrypted transponder chips.
When the key turns, the immobiliser conveys a radio-frequency serial number to the transponder in the key.

If you lost all your keys to a Mazda that made before 1998, your key has no chip. All you need to do is to go to the dealer or to a locksmith store with the VIN and create a new key. This process is quite simple and should cost less than a 100$ in most cases. One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN.
In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.
If you Mazda made in 1998 and above, your key might contain a chip (check the table above). When losing all the keys to an immobilized Mazda, the ECU reprogrammed to accept a new key. This means that the car towed to the dealership or to use the service of a mobile locksmith who will come out to you.
* Note - In a few old models losing all the keys also means that the ECU is reflashed and programmed with a set of 2 new keys. This make the recovery from a lost key almost double in price.
