Over the last 2 decades car makers started the use transponder keys and immobiliser. A transponder chip subdues the immobiliser when the key turned in the ignition. Only a specific programmed key can kindle the engine.
When the key turned in the ignition key-space, the ECU commits an electrical indicator message to the key. The motor vehicle will kindle only if it gleans an adaptable digital serial number back.
The system lock/unlock the door and trunk and sound an alarm from a distance. This discrete lock & key enable car anti theft technology and more.
The use of Securilock electronic keys launched in 1996 for the Mazda 626
as an optional feature. Since 1998 some vehicles paired with passive theft system II and some with PAT I.
From year 2000 Mazda use the electronic passive anti theft system with an encrypted transponder chips.
When the key turns, the immobiliser commits an audio and infrared waves signal message to the transponder in the key.
The passive anti theft system key than reappear an individual RF-ID to start the engine. If the vehicle computer recognize the identification pin, the car will start. Otherwise, few factors, as fuel pump the starter will het no power. The engine will remains disabled or maybe even locked for a number of minutes.
From 2007 few Mazda models adopt the Intelligent Access with push-button start ignition. This is an optional feature on specific vehicle.
The up-to-date Mazda electronic keys do make drivers daily life easier. Opening and closing the the trunk and doors, sound an alarm to track down a vehicle in a massive parking lot and more.
Now that autos use electronic keys, replacing those keys became more expensive and complex.
Recovering a lost transponder key, it is not enough to merley cut the key like old metal bladed keys. To be able to start the car, a transponder key programmed to match with the vehicle computer. If all the keys lost, the automobile's computer re-coded to utilize a new key and disallow the old one.
This means that you left with two options. The first is to tow the car to the dealership. The second option is to call an emergency lock-smith to come down to your place to do the job on premises.
Every new Mazda car fitted with two cut and program keys. If owner have both keys, up to 8 extra keys made by a simple dash-board console operation. This method promise that only the real owner with both original keys can make a supplemental key.
If you lost one key or bought your vehicle with only one PAT key, you have to go to a locksmith or to the dealer-ship. They will use specific equipment to clone another key. So basically you better always keep 3 keys around.
If you have 2 working keys and you want to produce an extraneous key for half the price using the steps below:
If you lost all your keys to a Mazda that made before 1998, your key has no chip. All you need to do is to go to the dealer or to a locksmith store with the VIN and create a new key. This process is quite simple and should cost less than a 100$ in most cases. One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN.
In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.
If you Mazda made in 1998 and above, your key might contain a chip (check the table above). When losing all the keys to an immobilized Mazda, the ECU reprogrammed to accept a new key. This means that the car towed to the dealership or to use the service of a mobile locksmith who will come out to you.
* Note - In a few old models losing all the keys also means that the ECU is reflashed and programmed with a set of 2 new keys. This make the recovery from a lost key almost double in price.
