Infiniti began using the NATS (Nissan Anti Theft System) transponder keys compatible keys with the Infiniti I45 1999. Transponder based mechanism are mandatry or optional depends on model and year.
Beginning at 2007, Infiniti utilized the 'Intelligent Key' smartkey with a pushbutton-start ignition. This system is optional or mandatory depend on model and year.
Infiniti transponder keys mainly used as a vehicle anti-theft technology. Together with the immobilizer, transponders helps protecting your Infiniti vehicle from unauthorized access.
The immobilizer initialized to recognize each key by a programmable code. When a key with unmatched code turned in the ignition, the vehicle becomes immobilized. The fuel-pump will shut down and will not start for a few minutes.
The key contains an electronic transponder chip hidden in the head of the key initialized with a unique code. When the key slide into the ignition and switch "ON", the chip sends a signal to the immobilizer. If the immobilizer recognize the code, it would send a command to the ECU which allows engine to start. If the code is incorrect, the immobilizer will lock the fuel pump and the engine will halt.
There is no onboard interface to program duplicate keys! Only registered security professional can enter the key-code and to perform "Immobilizer Reset Request".

Reprogramming interface and tools are available only to the Infiniti dealer or to a licensed locksmith. This means that the car towed to the dealer or a mobile locksmith will have to come out to the site of where the car is at.
