Honda started using transponder keys with the Honda Prelude 1996. Since 2002 all other Honda models adopt transponder keys.
In 2003 all Honda vehicles switched to a sidewinder type keys. The sidewinder is a laser cut key and use encrypted data in the transponder chip.
Since 2007 few models use proximity fobs (Keyless Access System) as either standard or optional equipment. The keyless entry device contain a transponder chip that works with a battery.
Honda transponder keys mainly used as a vehicle anti-theft technology. Together with the immobilizer, transponders helps protecting your Honda vehicle from unauthorized access.
The immobilizer initialized to recognize each key by a programmable code. When a key with unmatched code turned in the ignition, the vehicle becomes immobilized. The fuel-pump will shut down and will not start for a few minutes.
Honda imobilizer restrain the engine from starting unless a matched key employed! different generations of immobilisers presented for different years. Each have different applying rules.
The immobilized system feature the keys, the instrument cluster and the vehicle computer module. When a chipped key inserted into the ignition key hole, the chip wakes up. Then it transfers a radio-frequency signal back to the ECU.
If the signal matches the code in the auto's computer, the car engine will start. Otherwise, the injector of fuel halt and the motor vehicle will not start.
The immobilizer has nothing to do with the opening/closing of the doors, the alarm or the trunk.
Some older Honda models have an onboard interface to program a duplicate key. However in most cases a dedicated programmer required to make keys.
This modernized Honda transponder keys do make everyday life more convenient driving a vehicle. Closing and unlocking the doors and trunk, finding the vehicle by a horn sound in a big parking lot and many more.
With electronic key-lock, losing or breaking your key have a different price tag and process. Not only the higher price, but the process is totally different. For the key to start the vehicle, it has to be programmed to the car. This means that to make a key the vehicle has to be present.
Following are the list of Honda models that use transponders:
First generation Honda electronic keys (1996-2002) duplicated by a very economical cloning process. Cloning was done by the dealer or a locksmith with car key cutting machine and programmer. Owner can program a duplicate key using onboard programming procedure.
In 2003 Honda switched to an sidewinder keys with encrypted transponder chip. With sidewinder, duplicate key made requires diagnostic equipment from a dealer or a locksmith. When duplicating a sidewinder key, all previous keys must present.
If you have at least one functional key, you have 2 options to get a copy:
Your vehicle computer contains a special key-code saved by the manufacturer with the VIN. The key-code contain information designated for the cuts in the key. Using the VIN and a proof of ownership, a licensed locksmith or the dealer can originate a new key.
Cloning is copying the key cut and program data onto a new transponder blank. Using dedicated cutters and programmers the key cut and programmed to match the original.
In the case of losing all your keys, the vehicle computer is reprogrammed to accept a new key and reject the old one. This provide a security measurement assuring the disabling of the old/lost/stolen key.
Reprogramming interface and tools are available only to the Honda dealer or to a licensed locksmith. This means that the car towed to the dealer or a mobile locksmith will have to come out to the site of where the car is at.
Exception: For Honda Prelude 1997 and up the immobiliser module need to be re-flashed. This is a service unique to only few specific locksmiths.
