Does Volkswagen use transponder keys?
Volkswagen started using sidewinder transponder keys in 2000 and most vehicles adopt the use of transponder keys. The Passat is an exception which did not had transponders until mid-2001.
In 2006 few models started using the smartkey based on the Keyless Entry & Keyless Start (KESSY). This technology also use transponders and is either standard or optional equipment on various model and years.
Why does Volkswagen use transponder keys?
Transponder key provide vehicles with a higher security level against theft. Transponder deter and prevent theft by eliminating the option of ‘hot wiring’ the car using a discrete code. This makes breaking the door and ignition lock ineffective! If the car computer doesn’t recognize the key microchip code, it won’t start.
How does Volkswagen transponder and immobilizer work?
An immobilized Volkswagen consist of immobilizer, RFID transponder key and an antena around the ignition switch. When the key turned in the ignition, the antenna induces a voltage in the transponder chip. The chip send a unique encrypted code signal to the immobilizer. If the immobiliser recognize the code, it sends back a random number to the key. The key and immobiliser both calculate the codes. If the codes match on both sides, normal engine starting is allowed.

How to duplicate Volkswagen keys and remotes?
Volkswagen key programming is done with VW proprietary diagnostic equipment and programmers. The process of making a spare key also requires a unique PIN code obtained from Volkswagen. All previous keys must to be present for the duplication process.
To duplicate a Volkswagen key you have two options, the dealer or a locksmith. Getting a spare key from the dealership is a good option for a good quality OEM keys. The locksmith will be a good option if you are looking for the convenience.
Volkswagen key made by VIN
Each lock on your Volkswagen created with a special keycode at manufacturing time and saved with the VIN. Using the VIN, the locksmith or the dealer what’s designated for each cut in the key. To duplicate a key you will provide your VIN number, registration or title. Many times the dealer don't have the key in stock and will order a replacement key from Volkswagen which will takes 2 to 5 days to be delivered. Once the key has arrived, you will have to drive with your vehicle to the dealer to cut and program the new key.
Volkswagen key cloning
Few locksmiths have the ability to identify, edit, generate and clone transponder keys, remotes and smart keys. Using special key cloning machine, they can detect the signals from the transponder key code and the ignition coil. Cloning is usually used when you don't want to wait for the dealer key or if there is a problem in the vehicle key-lock system. For example, if the ignition cylinder and coil was replaced before.
Why is it hard to find a locksmith to make keys for Volkswagen?
Volkswagen was one of the first to protect the transponder with a unique 4-digit PIN code for each vehicle. Initially, the code was available only to the dealer. The 4 digit was ‘hashed’ in a 7-digit PIN that changed daily and is unique to the specific dealer.
The 4 digit code was eventually cracked and could easily be converted back to a 4-digit static PIN. Using a proprietary diagnostic tool (VAS 5052), few locksmiths can make keys to Volkswagen until 2005.
In 2006 Volkswagen countermeasure the process to keep grubby locksmiths from tinkering with their preciouses. Their proprietary diagnostic tool has to be plugged in simultaneously to the vehicle and to Volkswagen database via the internet.
After a wotldwide protest, Volkswagen made the ability to program keys available to third parties. A locksmith today can program Volkswagen keys ONLY if he purchase the VAS 5052 from Volkswagen.
Can you program a Volkswagen remote yourself?
Volkswagen offer onboard interface to duplicate remotes! In order to program a duplicate remote, you will need one functional key and a cut and programmed key. To get a cut and programmed key you can ask the dealer for a key by VIN or to buy cut key online. Follow the insrtruction below to program a duplicate remote:
- Insert new cut key into the ignition and turn the it to the “On” position. (Do not crank the motor).
- Step out of your vehicle and close the driver’s door.
- Insert the primary key into the driver door lock and turn it to the right. This will manually lock the door. Once the door is locked, remove the key.
- Press the “Unlock” button the primary key remote hold it down for at least one second and release it.
- Open the door and turn the ignition back to the “Off” position.
- The new remote should be programmed to the vehicle.
Lost/stolen key replacement! What to do?
One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.
If you lost all your keys to a vehicle that uses transponder key, the motor vehicle main computer should be reprogrammed. The immobiliser will accept a new key and reject the old one assuring the disabling of the old/lost/stolen key.
This recomputing interface available only to the Volkswagen dealer or a licensed locksmith. This means that the car towed to the dealer or a mobile locksmith will have to come out to you.
Note - If you choose to tow your vehicle to the dealer, you don't need the car at the dealer when you order the key. You only need to tow the vehicle when the new key arrives to the dealer.
Can the dealer make keys for older Volkswagen?
Most Volkswagen dealers has stopped making remotes and flipkeys for older Passat, Jetta and Golf models. They will cut a new metal transponder key to manually unlock the door and start the car but no fobs.My Volkswagen ignition key wont turn! What to do?
