Porsche started using sidewinder transponder keys in 1998 with the Porsche 911. Since 2004 all models adopt the use of transponder keys.
In 2006 few models started using the smartkey based on the Porsche Entry & Drive System. This technology also use transponders and is either standard or optional equipment on various model and years.
Transponder key provide vehicles with a higher security level against theft. Transponder deter and prevent theft by eliminating the option of ‘hot wiring’ the car using a discrete code. This makes breaking the door and ignition lock ineffective! If the car computer doesn’t recognize the key microchip code, it won’t start.
An immobilized Porsche consist of immobilizer, RFID transponder key and an antena around the ignition switch. When the key turned in the ignition switch the chip sends an RFID signal with a unique encrypted code. An antenna inside the switch receives this signal and sends it to the ECU. If the code in the signal recognize by the immobilizer, the engine will be allowed to start. If the immobiliser does not recognize the code, it will disable the fuel pump, the ignition coil or the injectors. The engine may crank for a few seconds and halt or will not turn on at all.
Porsche key programming is done with Porsche proprietary diagnostic equipment and programmers. The process of making a spare key also requires a unique PIN code obtained from Porsche. All previous keys must to be present for the duplication process.
To duplicate a Porsche key you have two options, the dealer or a locksmith. Getting a spare key from the dealership is a good option for a good quality OEM keys. The locksmith will be a good option if you are looking for the convenience.
Each lock on your Porsche created with a special keycode at manufacturing time and saved with the VIN. Using the VIN, the locksmith or the dealer what’s designated for each cut in the key. To duplicate a key you will provide your VIN number, registration or title. Many times the dealer don't have the key in stock and will order a replacement key from Porsche which will takes 2 to 5 days to be delivered. Once the key has arrived, you will have to drive with your vehicle to the dealer to cut and program the new key.
Few locksmiths have the ability to identify, edit, generate and clone transponder keys, remotes and smart keys. Using special key cloning machine, they can detect the signals from the transponder key code and the ignition coil. Cloning is usually used when you don't want to wait for the dealer key or if there is a problem in the vehicle key-lock system. For example, if the ignition cylinder and coil was replaced before.
Remotes are likely to have malfunction with time because of losses of signal especially after replacing batteries. Porsche offer onboard interface to reprogram and duplicate remotes! In order to program a remote, you will need one functional key and a cut and programmed key. All current remotes should be reprogrammed with the new remote.
Read or the internet or your user manual for your model and year to find specific steps for your car. Different Porsche models might use different steps.
One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.
If you lost all your keys to a vehicle that uses transponder key, the ECU should be reprogrammed. The immobiliser will accept a new key and reject the old one certifying the disabling of the old/lost/stolen key.
This recoding interface available only to the Porsche dealer or a licensed locksmith. This means that the car towed to the dealer or a mobile locksmith will have to come out to you.
Note - If you choose to tow your vehicle to the dealer, you don't need the car at the dealer when you order the key. You only need to tow the vehicle when the new key arrives to the dealer.
Lost Porsche Keys Is a website dedicated to Porsche key replacement service using mail packaging and shipping. The process involed with removing the alarm module (PAS) from the car and ship it to them. The company will send you back a pre-programmed, disarmed module for a small fraction of dealer price.
