The PATS (passive anti-theft system) key uses radio frequency technology to identify and deter a car theft. The "passive" in the name means that the system requires no activity from the driver.

How does Lincoln transponder and immobilizer work?

Lincoln PATS system uses a chip in the head of the key and an immobiliser inside the vehicle. The key programmed with a unique identifying code from a possible 18 billion combinations. When the key turned in the ignition, the ECU sends out a RF signal to the transponder in the key. The key chip then returns a unique RF signal to the ECU. If the immobiliser recognize the code, the vehicle will start.

5. Watch the immobilizer turn on (red light) and goes off, turn the key back OFF and pull it out.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the 2nd working key.
7. Insert the new properly cut P.A.T key into the ignition and turn it to the ON state and wait for the red immobilizer light to turn off which means that the new key is program.
8. Repeat steps 3 - 7 for each extra key

How to duplicate Lincoln key by VIN?

Using the VIN, the dealer or a locksmith can access the key-code on file. With the key-code they can cut and program a duplicate key.
