The use of Securilock electric keys launched in 1996 for the Mustang and Taurus. The first three years the PATS was an optional component on few models.
From year 1997 Lincoln use the electrical passive theft system with an encrypted transponder chips.
The PATS (passive anti-theft system) key uses radio frequency technology to identify and deter a car theft. The "passive" in the name means that the system requires no activity from the driver.
Lincoln PATS system uses a chip in the head of the key and an immobiliser inside the vehicle. The key programmed with a unique identifying code from a possible 18 billion combinations. When the key turned in the ignition, the ECU sends out a RF signal to the transponder in the key. The key chip then returns a unique RF signal to the ECU. If the immobiliser recognize the code, the vehicle will start.
Duplicate PATS 1 keys may be done using a simple on-board procedure, as long as you have one functional key. For the PATS 2 and E-PATS key you must have two existing keys to make an additional key onboard. If you don't have at least 2 keys, the new keys must be programmed using dedicated diagnostic equipment.
Every new Lincoln car provided with two cut and program keys. If owner have both keys (one key with PATS 1), up to 8 extra keys made by an efficient control board procedure. This method ensure that only the real owner with both original keys can make a surplus key.
If you are missing one passive anti theft key, to duplicate a key the ECU requires reprogramming. You have to go to a locksmith or to the dealer-ship to clone another key. Basically you better always keep 3 PATS 2 keys around or at least 2 PATS 1 keys.
If you have working keys, to construct a backup key use the steps below:
Using the VIN, the dealer or a locksmith can access the key-code on file. With the key-code they can cut and program a duplicate key. This process is fast and easy and usually used when a current key is worn-out or dent. Generating keys by VIN requires specific programmers and tools as well as a license.
Cloning is using cutters and programmers to copy the chip and cuts of a transponder key to a new blank. The advantage over on-board is that you do not need access to the vehicle, and only needs one operating key.
If you have power windows and at least one functional key, you can program a remote yourself. Buy your remote online and use the following instruction to program it.
If you lost all your keys to a Lincoln that made before 1997, your key has no chip. All you need to do is to go to the dealer or to a locksmith store with the VIN and create a new key. This process is quite simple and should cost less than a 100$ in most cases.
One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key. This key done by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.
If you Lincoln made in 1997 and above, your key might contain a chip (check the table above).
When losing all the keys to an immobilized Lincoln, the ECU reprogrammed to accept a new key. This means that the car towed to the dealership or to use the service of a mobile locksmith who will come out to you.
* Note - In a few old models losing all the keys also means that the ECU reflashed and programmed with a set of 2 new keys. This make the recovery from a lost key almost double in price.
