The first Land Rover transponder key appeared in 2002 with the Freelander. Since 2006 all models manufactured by Land Rover use transponders.
In 2010 Land Rover first introduce Push Start ignition and smart keys in their vehicles. This system consist of the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) or Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM) ECU.
The basic purpose of Land Rover transponder key is to eliminate car theft. Without the proper programmed chip in the key, the starter solenoid will be cut-off the power to the ignition and the car will not start.
Immobilized Range Rover consist of a Body Control Unit (BCU), communication channel (K bus), Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and transponder key. Range Rover use a 'rolling code' system to change value each time the key is used.
When the driver door is unlocked, the BCU outputs a 'vehicle unlocked' message on the K bus to the ECU. The ECU then energises the transponder coil around the ignition switch. When the transponder key inserted into the ignition switch, the ECU reads the identity of the chip. If the key is valid, the ECU outputs a 'valid key in ignition lock' message on the K bus which disengages the steering column lock. The steering lock then sends a release signal to the immobilisation ECU.
When the ignition switch is turned, the ECU interrogates the transponder for the password and rolling code. If these are correct, the ECU sends the coded release signal to the ECM and energises the starter solenoid to crank the engine. The ECU also update the transponder with a new rolling code to use for the next time.
Land Rover use a Stealth Active anti clone theft immobiliser system which prevent cloning of keys! The Stealth Active system runs in the background of the immobilizer. When a car thief try to use a cloned key the dash presented an unauthorised mode alarm which prevents starting the vehicle.
Following are the list of Land Rover models that use transponders:
Duplicating keys for a Land Rover requires both a laser key cutting machine and a special factory computer and software.
Land Rover offer no onboard interface to duplicate keys by yourself. Diagnostic tools and programmers are required for any update to the ECU.
The first thing to do when duplicating the key is to cut the metal blade using the EKA code. This EKA code is provided with every new Land Rover on a vary small tin or plastic plate.
If the EKA code is lost or misplaced, it can also be obtained from the manufacturer by the VIN.
Duplicating keys by VIN is done by a locksmith or the Land Rover dealer
For this, ALL functional keys should be programmed again along with the new key. Basically, this process erased all current keys from the cars computer and then all keys are programmed again.
Two important tips before buying a duplicate Land Rover key or remote:
Key cloning is a process of copying the key without having the car. Using the data embedded in the original transponder to program a new replicates key.
Land Rover was all confident in their ECU software release in stopping key cloning. Fortunately, locksmiths and unfortunately vehicle thieves are always one step ahead. Software and components are constantly design and develope in order to clone a new key to Land Rover.
A locksmith with after market key programmer and diagnosis tool like IIDtool can create cloned key using 2 methods:
Sometimes after replacing a battery in the key or in the vehicle, your remote m8ight stop responding. If your remote is not working or not recognized, use the following simple steps to get it working again:
When you lose all your keys to a Land Rover the process special reprogramming tools are required. This are available only to the Land Rover dealer or to a licensed locksmith.
You will need the vehicle identification number to place order (VIN) and provide valid proof of ownership with a picture ID. If you choose the dealer, many times keys will arrive at dealership from the manufacturer within 2-3 business days. The vehicle computer is reprogrammed to accept a new key and reject the lost keys. Vehicle must be present at the dealership or having a mobile locksmith onsite.
