Does Jaguar use transponder keys?

The first Jaguar transponder key appeared in 1998 with the XJ and XK. Since 2000 all models manufactured by Jaguar use transponders. Jaguar transponder keys are high security specially cut key with angled cuts made by Tibbe.

There are 3 types of Jaguar transponder keys:

1. Chip key - Common for older models. A chip key has manually unlock/lock the doors, strat the engine and is considered the least expensive to make.
2. Switchblade key - It is remote and a foldable metal blade in a single unit.
3. Proximity key - A push to start ignition Smart Key System is often found in the newest Jaguars since 2007.

What is a Jaguar transponder key used for?

The basic purpose of Jaguar transponder key is to eliminate car theft. Without the proper programmed chip in the key, the fuel pump will be cut-off the fuel to the ignition and the car will not start.

How does Jaguar immobilizer works?

The Jaguar immobilizer is an anti-theft system reside on the engine ECU. It prevents the car from starting when un-authorized key is used. This system uses a special digitally coded transponder chip in the key. When the key turned in the ignition, the chip emits an RFID signal with a digital identification and send it to the immmobilizer. If the ECU does NOT recognize this code, the ignition circuit shut down and the engine will not start.

Since 2000 Jaguar use a Stealth Active anti clone theft immobiliser system which prevent cloning of keys! The Stealth Active system runs in the background of the immobilizer. When a car thief try to use a cloned key the dash presented an unauthorised mode alarm which prevents starting the vehicle.

How do I know if I have a transponder key?

Following are the list of Jaguar models that use transponders:

How to duplicate Jaguar keys and remotes?

Jaguar XJ8, S-Type 2001-2008 and X-Type 2002-2008 that use PATS keys have an onboard interfa ce to duplicate keys by yourself. Duplicating keys for other models requires both a Tibbe key cutting machine and a special factory computer and software.

Jaguar uses the Stealth Active anti clone immobiliser starting from 2001, therefore cloning is possible until year 2000.

How to duplicate Jaguar keys and remotes by yourself?

For this type of duplication, driver must have at least 2 functional keys. If only one key left, dedicated diagnostic tools and programmers are required.

The first thing to do when duplicating the key is to cut the metal blade using the T-Code. This T-Code is provided with every new Jaguar on a vary small tin or plastic plate.

If the T-Code is lost or misplaced, it can also be obtained from the manufacturer by the VIN. This done by a locksmith or the Jaguar dealer

Note - Ford dealership can also cut Tibbe keys.

The next thing to do is to program the key and remote using the following onboard procedure:

1. Sit inside the car with 2 functional keys and the new cut and unprogrammed key.
2. Insert the first functional key and turn to the run position (II) for a maximum of 5 seconds.
3. Turn off the ignition and remove the first key.
4. Within 10 seconds, insert the second fuctional key and turn to the run position (II) for a maximum of 5 seconds
5. Turn off the ignition and remove the second key.
6. Within twenty seconds, insert the new unprogrammed key and turn to the run position
7. The PATS LED should light up for 3 seconds confirming storage of the additional key.
8. Then turn to off and remove the key.

The last step of the duplication is to program the remote to lock/unlock the doors:

1. Insert the new key to the ignition switch and turn to position I.
2. Within 5 seconds turn the key to the run position II and back to I 4 times.
3. A confirmation tone should sound.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Press any button on the remote and hear a confirmation tone again.

Duplicate Jaguar key by VIN

Using the VIN and the Jaguar IDS system the dealer or a locksmith can duplicate another key. For this, ALL functional keys should be programmed again along with the new key. Basically, this process erased all current keys from the cars computer and then all keys are programmed again. There is a limit of 5 keys at any given point in time for each vehicle.

Two important tips before buying a duplicate Jaguar key or remote:

1. One of the main problems owners face when looking for a duplicate key is shortage of blank keys. Don't drive to the dealer before calling with the VIN to make sure they have the key in stock. If they don't have it you can ask them to order it for you which usually takes 3-5 days.
2. Prices vary slightly depent on the dealer, so for the best price you better call more than one dealership. Call a few dealerships with your VIN and ask for a quote.



Jaguar key cloning

It is possible to clone keys for Jaguar until the yuear 2000. Jaguar key cloning is a process of copying the key without having the car. The technician use the data embedded in the original transponder to program a new replicates key.

You will need the vehicle identification number to place order (VIN) and provide valid proof of ownership with a picture ID. If you choose the dealer, many times keys will arrive at dealership from the manufacturer within 2-3 business days. The vehicle computer is reprogrammed to accept a new key and reject the lost keys. Vehicle must be present at the dealership or having a mobile locksmith onsite.
