Ferrari started using sidewinder transponder keys in 2001.
In 2007 few models started using the keyless access key either standard or optional equipment on various model and years.
Transponder key provide vehicles with a higher security level against theft. Transponder deter and prevent theft by eliminating the option of ‘hot wiring’ the car using a discrete code. This makes breaking the door and ignition lock ineffective! If the car computer doesn’t recognize the key microchip code, it won’t start.
Immobilized Ferrari equipped with an electronic immobiliser system which is activated automatically when the key removed from the ignition. The key equipped with a chip which transmits a coded RFID signal to the ECU when turned in the ignition. If the ECU recognize the signal, the CODE and EOBD warning light on the instrument panel turns off and the engine allows to start.
Ferrari immmobilizer also use a 'rolling code' system which use a new cypher code every time the car start. The renew code prevent thieves from using a radio receiver and recorder to clone keys.
A new Ferrari 355, 360, 456, 550 and 575 comes from the factory with three remote keys, one red master key and two black slaves. The black and the red keys works the same, but the red key also hold the ECU Personal Identification Number (PIN). The PIN has a special function in putting the vehicle into learning mode to programm duplicate keys.
The PIN is also printed on a small card provided with the set of 3 keys. The PIN can also be used to start the car if the key is lost or runs out of battery. If the PIN is lost, you can buy a complete new matched set of three keys and a new PIN and set of 3 new keys from Ferrari for between $1000-$1400.
Using onboard memorisation procedure up to maximum of 7 keys can be programmed, including those already in your possession. To duplicate the key you need the key CODE, PIN and proof of ownership for the vehicle.
To duplicate a Ferrari key you have 3 options, the dealer or a locksmith or online. Getting a spare key from the dealership is a good option for a good quality OEM keys. The locksmith will be a good option if you are looking for the convenience. Getting copies of keys online can save you hundreds of dollars, but requires some basic technical skills.
If you choose to buy keys online, make sure to buy the correct frequency - US (315Mhz) European (433.9Mhz).
Ferrari dont use the VIN number to program or get codes to the key, since the key is read only and cant save the VIN. The PIN provided with the red key is the code used to enter learning mode and the keys are programmed in the ECU.
Few locksmiths can clone keys, however the cloned keys will have a problem to work together with the original. With the rollong code system, every time the key is used, the ECU sent a code for the key to use on the next time. The cloned key will have problem starting the vehicle, since it dosn't know the next code in the original key. A clonde key is not recommended, but can be a back-up for a lost original key,

If your Ferrari made before 1998, your vehicle use a key with no chip. Find a dealer, locksmith or even a hardware store with a car key cutting machine and get a new key made by the VIN.
One exception to the above is if the ignition changed and is not in sync with the VIN. In the second case a locksmith need to replace the ignition again or to make a new key by reading the key grooves inside the ignition cylinder. This process is more complex and requires a locksmith with the right machine and experience.
If you lost all your keys to a Ferrari that built after 2001, Ferrari recommend contacting a dealer or a locksmith. They will need your license and title as a proof of ownership. Using the PIN number from the card supplied with the car, they will reprogram a new set of 3 keys.
Ferrari Fobs Is a website dedicated to Ferrari key replacement service using mail packaging and shipping. The process involed with removing the alarm module from the car and ship it to them with the PIN.
